Mahjongg

  • I've been playing mahjongg since my aunt taught me in 1961.  I love the game and promised my aunt I would spread the word!  I've taught hundreds of people to play and it's caught on.

  1. I downloaded the new version but there are no other players.
Why are the players so cut throat on the other version?
I'm new to the on line game, but not new to game.

    1. Hello - the new version is still being beta tested and not a lot of users are on as of yet. I personally am having problems connecting with my iPad though I can use Firefox on my PC.
You may find if you play at a slower table - 9 minutes or more - the players are more patient and less cutthroat. If you have other friends who are online you can arrange to "meet" them and play with people you know. Don't give up!

  2. There are also a group of players in the "official" area of the old version of the on line game that play there regularly and are not at all cut throat. They are friendly and there is no time so there is less pressure to go faster. However, the unfortunate thing is that there are not always any other players there waiting. Then you will need to go into the 9 minute plus games. Good luck!

  3. i have a question .
If I throw a tile to a 3rd exposure and I was bet on, and the person gets Mah Jongg,, how much does that person get paid from me? How much does the person who bet on me have to pay?
    Thank you for your time.

    1. According to National Mah Jongg League rules, it doesn't matter how many exposures there are. If a person throws your mahjongg tile they pay double the value of the hand. If the hand is bet on, the better also gets double the value of the hand. Some groups play with table rules that state a player who throws into 3 exposures (or 2 exposures, or an obvious hand) have to pay for the entire table, but that is a table rule that should be agreed upon before play starts. It is not an official rule.

    1. No, sorry. According to official rules it's the same as any other mahjongg.

  5. Two players wanted the same tile, and we knew the next player in turn would technically get the tile first. However, the player who called the tile first had already racked, and then, the player (the next in turn)said she wanted it. Is it already too late once the first player racked?

    1. When you say "racked" do you mean she placed it on top of her rack or in the sloping part of the rack?

  6. I'm sorry...she had already place it on top of her rack.

    1. If she had not exposed any tiles, but simply placed it on her rack, then the next player in turn is entitled to the tile. If, however, she even as much as *started* to expose, then the player next in turn is too late.
This is according to rulings given by the National Mah Jongg League in their yearly newsletter. If you want more clarification, you can call the League for a ruling at the number on the back of the card.

    2. Correction to the above - if the player had placed the tile on her rack or started to expose, she is entitled to keep the tile.

  9. Whilst playing online, I made an error in calling a tile which did not fit into a place in my hand and the computer shut down my hand immediately. It then skipped over the next player. Why is that?

    1. I couldn't really answer this question, as each online game is programmed differently. If you had another exposure and when you called the tile it was obvious that the two exposures were not in a hand on the card you were playing, the computer automatically declared you dead. Depending on the way the program was written, it may have skipped the next player and returned the play to the player next in turn from the discarder. This is all conjecture on my part. You would really have to ask the administrator of the game site that you were using.

    1. Please see the response above. The computer will call your hand dead when the exposure is incorrect. Make certain that you are playing the correct card, and that you are exposing correctly in terms of the number of tiles you need in the hand and what suit needs to be used . The computer will call you dead if there is no such hand on the card. I do run a beginner's group on Zoom - you can email me for details.

  11. Can I pick up a discarded soap to complete a “2020” set?

    1. 2020 is considered singles/pairs and not a kong, which is four identical tiles. You can only pick up a discarded soap if it completes your hand and gives you mahjongg.
